Event: Press Conference: District Assembly Elections 2019

On December 17th, Ghana is scheduled to elect a new set of District Assembly members who will serve for another four years as required by the 1992 Constitution. The upcoming elections offer another opportunity for Ghana to deepen efforts to promote gender equality and sensitivity in developmental processes. Women representation in district assemblies has continuously remained very low. Women have failed to attain the 30% UN recommended minimum threshold in representation in the assemblies. The highest number of elected women in the district assemblies was in the year 2006 when 478 women were elected out of a total membership of 4732. Elections are a cornerstone of democracy. We must use our voices, positions, connection and ability to work towards addressing the existing inequalities and imbalances in representation. Gender equality is the surest path to sustainable development. We call upon all to vote on December 17!

Event: Ghana's Climate Change Adaptation Policy Workshop

ActionAid and ABANTU held a research dissemination today with members of the community, some of whom traveled from Takoradi and beyond to attend. We worked with ActionAid as partners on their mandate to reassert women’s emancipation on all levels of society, protecting their rights and promoting equity in gender relations locally and internationally. The component in focus is agroecology, which is a key aspect of climate change adaptation. In Ghana, about 70% of the total land area is used for agriculture with about 70% of the population depending directly or indirectly on the sector. The workshop objectives include the development of a national policy on agroecology which is not only embedded in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) processes, but also in Ghana’s commitments in agriculture and women’s rights and gender equality sectors. This will afford organizations, policy makers and stakeholders the opportunity to engage actors at local, regional and international levels. The workshop included comprehensive presentations by Dr. Antwi-Boasiako Amoah of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Harjeet Singh of the International Programme Manager Resilience with ActionAid and was facilitated by Baba Tuahiru, consultant. #GHW4Climate #adaptagro2climate

Event: Advocacy for the Passage of an Affirmative Action Law

ABANTU for Development with support from African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is implementing a project on strengthening advocacy for the passage of an affirmative action law in Ghana, whose ultimate goal is to secure a legal mechanism for the best gender equality outcomes for all citizens in public life. The project aims at developing and implementing a nationwide affirmative action campaign strategy in order to strengthen advocacy initiatives for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill. In spite of the existing environment where patriarchal traditions are entrenched, the country has an obligation to prioritize inclusiveness in consonance with the 1992 Constitution to meet the demand for increased women participation in governance processes. #affirmativeactionbill #affirmativeactionghana #affirmativeactionnow
