On October 13, ABANTU for Development joined the National Disaster Management Organisation(NADMO) to celebrate this year’s International Day for Disaster Risks Reduction (IDRR) in Accra at an exhibition programme organised by NADMO.
This year the annual event focused on target G of the Sendai Framework which is “Substantially increase the availability of and access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments to people by 2030.”
The exhibitions brought together various DRR stakeholders championing climate action within the Greater Accra Region such as the Interior Ministry, Ghana Meteorological Agency, Ghana Climate Change Coalition(GCCC), Greater Accra Resilient & Intergrated Development Project(GARID), Red Cross and including various DRR Social Clubs from selected Senior High Schools among others
The event focused on strengthening capacity building for various Disaster Risks Reduction (DRR) stakeholders at the local level. In line with this year’s theme, capacity building involves the delivery of accurate and timely climate information to the people mostly affected by climate disasters.
In a speech delivered the Director-General of NADMO, Mr. Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh, he advocated for an integrated approach where several elements such as preparedness, response, recovery, reconstruction and risk transfer become interdependent and aid in disaster risk reduction efforts in Ghana.
A representative of the Interior Minister of Ghana called for support for capacity building at the local levels while shedding light on the many disaster reduction efforts done by the Ministry and Nadmo. Quoting his words, “We need to accept the fact that all disasters occur at the local level hence that is where capacities need to be strengthened” underscores the need for strengthening local level disaster risk reduction in a timely manner.
Various stakeholder organizations such as Red Cross, ESOKO, Ghana Flood Risk APP, Delsah Engineering among others exhibited various early action and response technological projects they are involved in to help reduce the levels of risk in the event of a disasters in order to save lives and property.
ABANTU for Development exhibited a documentary on “Early Warning, Early Action For All” in addition to educating participants on why women should be central in developing disaster risk technologies and efforts. Women are high among the list of vulnerable groups in times of disasters and as such should be given great attention help reduce their risk to loss of lives.
